Right Age for Orthodontics

Early intervention is the key to a happy, healthy smile. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that an orthodontist first see a child as early as age seven and sometimes earlier if a parent or the family dentist discovers a problem. At Koen Orthodontics, we believe that the timing of orthodontic treatment is extremely important and greatly affects the treatment result. We like to see our patients at a young age to conduct an initial, free orthodontic examination.

Our goal is to reduce treatment time in full braces and provide the best, most stable results possible. Since no two patients are alike, there is not a specific age that is best to begin treatment. However, early diagnosis and treatment by a specialist can help guide facial growth, tooth eruption, and prevent more serious problems from developing. Adolescents that show signs of misalignment of teeth or a dysfunctional jaw or bite are strong candidates for care.

While most people tend to associate orthodontics with children, adults are also prime candidates for treatment. As a matter of fact, approximately one-third of the patients that we treat are adults. It is very typical for adults, no matter what age, to experience rotation or misalignment of teeth. Advances in technology as well as discrete treatment options have made it possible for adults of all ages to realize the benefits of orthodontic treatment.
